Windows 7 suddenly not genuine?

Booted my pc out of sleep mode yesterday, did some browsing on reddit, and out of nowhere a pop up from windows saying the (copy isn't genuine) asks me to validate/activate. I was confused, as I bought this pc with windows 7 pre-installed on it with a valid OEM key; it was the first thing I had checked after setting up the computer initially.

I did notice that the pc was originally shipped from dell with XP, but had a Vista upgrade sticker on the top. My guess was they upgraded it one last time before refurbishing and selling it, but didn't include the install disk or CoA key.

If i try to activate, it says "The Windows 7 professional product key you've typed is invalid for activation", even though I never tried to type the code in, as it wasn't included in the purchase.

I did also try Windows 10 through the free upgrade in july, but downgraded about 2 weeks after.
I also recently installed a new video card at the beginning of September if that may have messed with anything. Was an Nvidia pci-e to another Nvidia pci-e.

I updated my bios settings last night after noticing this problem as well, to no avail...

If there is anything I've missed, please let me know. I really don't want to buy 8.1 or 10 if it's not necessary.

Thank you for your time :)

It sounds like whoever you purchased a refurb from used an activation ID that Microsoft has now invalidated. I don't think you have much recourse. Unless the company you purchased from can do something. But if they used questionable licenses to start with, I doubt they would help. Sounds like you will have to buy an OS.

I'm assuming you did not buy this PC 'new'?

Upgrading to Windows 10 does not change the legitimacy status of the original Windows 7 or 8.1, or the resulting Windows 10.
