Why will it not support that refresh rate? so your telling me Dvi-D is better than HDMI?

The cable support a certain bandwidth.... DVI-D supports enough bandwidth for 144 Hz.... the current HDMI spec does not.

Display port also works.... but not for 4k.... again DP 1.2 just doesn't have the bandwidth for 4k at 144 Hz....which is one reason I guess why there are no 144 Hz 4k monitors.... no cable can deliver it.

Its confusing with all these different interface versions, i get that. It just comes down to knowing what you have and understanding what you can do with it. For high refresh rates DVI is better but not without more confusion, as the link above by Tanyac explains yet other differences in DVI cable types.

HDMI is convenient because it can carry audio and makes sense in using this cable for consoles/home cinema setup. HDMI has gone through different versions, the latest is v2.0. Your 980ti has HDMI 2.0 support but your monitor only uses HDMI version 1.4a.

HDMI2 is able to do 1080p@ 120Hz in 2D but that's no good to you, you want 144Hz

Your monitor and 980ti has DualLink DVI and your monitor should have included the correct cable to get the most out of your display.

Which is what I said. DVI-D if you want 144hz. HDMI will work, but not at 144hz. In reality HDMI and DVI are both the exact same thing, being purely digital standards, except HDMI can carry the audio signal as well to devices that can take advantage of that or have integrated speakers. DVI however can utilize a dual link, if you have a dual link DVI port, and run at 144hz. So if that's what you want, then use the dual link DVI-D output on your graphics card. That's it. There's nothing more to it.

I'll add though that HDMI is not any better for video, or anything else, the DVI, since they're the same thing. Both are full digital HD signals.
