How much VRAM for 3 1440p monitors?

Hi guys,

In the process of building my new gaming/video editing/graphic design desktop.

I am planning run with 3 1440p monitors, more specifically, 3 of the Acer Predator XB270HU 27" G-SYNC IPS monitors.

Would a single GTX 980Ti suffice or would I need the 12GB of VRAM that the TITAN X has?

A second question about the GPU, I have heard rumours that a Titan X only achieves optimum performance with 32GB of RAM, how true is this? Am currently planning to get 16GB of RAM and i'm wondering if that's enough?

Appreciate the help :)

GPU performance isn't at all linked to the amount of system memory the user has. You could have 32, 16, or even 8 and you wouldn't see a difference. The only time system memory would affect a GPU is if the GPU ran out of memory space and had to use System memory as well. Having 32 GB is completely unnecessary unless you are running a server.

I'm adding this part in here for the trolls. Sure less than 8 GBs can affect game performance but it's not due to a requirement by the graphics card. Modern games just need more memory.

The Acer Predator XB270HU has decent color (much better than other gaming monitors) but I wouldn't recommend any professional graphics work on it. Assuming you're getting a gaming monitor, I'll assume you know this.

The 980 TI is good for running one monitor at 1440p but you definitely shouldn't expect Nvidia surround with that card at that resolution. Getting a Titan-X wouldn't improve performance. Sure the amount of memory would help with surround gaming but it's going to be bottle-necked by memory bandwidth and other factors long before memory becomes an issue.

Thanks for that.

Yeah I don't plan to do any editing and rendering work professionally, just as a casual user. This build will be primarily for gaming, and I really wanted a monitor that had really nice colors and a great look overall, and am not too worried about the slower response time, so the XB270HU seems like a great choice for me.

But after reading what you said, are you suggesting that cut back to one 1440p monitor and have the other 2 at 1080p instead?

The display lag on the XB270HU is very good. 3 ms total as measured by TFTCentral. It beat out many other gaming monitors.

I would not suggest getting two 1080p monitors. I just had to note that the 980 Ti would not be able to handle 3 of those monitors in surround gaming. If you really want the best gaming experience, I would highly recommend an Ultra-Wide monitor. They have the presence of 3 monitors without the annoying bezel and they don't take as much muscle to run. The Acer Z35 will be coming out soon. It's a 35 inch curved ultra-wide monitor. The good part, in addition to being a gaming monitor, is that it has a VA panel. It should be a very good all around panel with a focus on gaming. It's very expensive as it's going to retail at $1100 dollars.

Thanks for that! I'll keep your suggestion in mind when making my decision.
