My laptop recently died, but I got the hard disk out. I put the hard disk in an external case; I connected this disk to my desktop via the usb cable, it worked fine. However, when I later restarted my desktop (after removing my laptop hard disk upon desktop shutdown) my desktop froze at the windows boot screen.

I had to take a backup of my registry and work from their to build the registry and got the windows to run again. Now I fear if I connect my laptop hard disk again, the same thing wil happen to my desktop - it will freeze again at the windows boot up screen.

I have some really important data on my laptop hard disk and it will take many sitings to have it completely reorganized before I empty the laptop hard disk and format it to remove the boot part of the laptop hard disk.

Can you please tell me how should I approach to move my data from my laptop hard disk?

Hey there, billbeard.

Although unlikely in most cases, conflicts like these are possible sometimes. You could try the drive with a different computer to see if the same thing happens, but not before you've backed up that computer's data, just to be on the safe side. You could also try to delete the laptop HDD's system partition from Disk Management and hope that this would solve the issue. you might try booting to Ubuntu Live USB/DVD, perhaps that wouldn't mess with the other OS and recover your files this way.

Hope that helps.
