two core i7 CPUs on a server motherboard

Most likely. However, usually when somebody says it's not going to work, then nobody will try what should not work. So I'm not sure how twin i7s will work on a server mobo.

Motherboard manufacturers supply list of compatible CPU's for each motherboard
they will probably specify how close a pair of CPU's have to be (eg same stepping)
compatibility may well vary according to BIOS version
Have you done your research on manufacturers web site?
what socket is on the motherboard ? and is it I7 compatible
