Upgrade question: gtx 960 or 970 considering I don't currently play 1080p?

Hi all,

First of all I have to say that I have found you guys to be immeasurably helpful in the past when looking at different specs, decisions and component reviews. So I just want to start by saying thanks, especially as you do it off your own backs. However I have a more specific query in relation to my recent upgrade conundrum.

I have a KPA gtx 560 which has and is continuing to serve me well, but I have noted that some of the newer games out (e.g. TW3) will not likely run well on my current system. I do have a restricted budget but potentially can go higher if it is likely that the new card will last for longer than if I chose a cheaper option. As you can see from the title, I am deliberating the 960 or 970. I do not have an hd monitor and am unlikely to have one for a long time. My current resolution is 1920 x 1080p. In advance I know that I will not get true hd with that resolution on a non-hd screen, I just prefer it with the size of my monitor:p I am also unlikely to want higher resolutions than this.

With the above in mind, would you guys recommend the gtx 960 or 970? From what I have seen, I would expect the 960 to last 3-4 years and the 970 4-6 years. Would you agree with this? I am not at all fussed about ultra settings as long as the game looks decent and is not at lowest settings. I am also wondering if my relatively low resolution requirement would help with gaming and or the length of use of the card (i.e. how long it is good for.)

My current specs are:

AMD fx-8350 with hyper 212 cooler
M5a97 r2.0 Motherboard
8GB Corsair Vengeance DDR3 Ram
Coolermaster 600 Watt PSU (85% efficiency)
GTX 560

Thanks in advance for all your help.

No problem :) Yeah, GTX 970 will be future proof coz of vram and its more powerful :) .Coming games will need more vrams, gpu power and other things. Or if you really want you can take GTX 960 with 4gb But GTX 970 is more powerful. For now GTX 960 is pretty nice for 1080p but in future what you can know.
Now vrams is more for ultra textures and more than 2 monitors but for lower quality 2gb of ram its enough :)

Hey, Gtx 970 would be for ultra high textures coz it has 4 gb ram, but know for gaming on 1080p and medium-high graphics gtx 960 is enough.
Difference between Gtx 970 and 960 in gaming is about 10-25 FPS

Thanks Suztera and Marijus. Will the 4GB on the 970 mean that it is more futureproof? The last thing I want is to buy a card which will be become near obsolete in two years. The 960 is attractive purely because of the price point and the fact it "should" perform better for longer at lower resolutions. I am much closer however to making my decision. Thanks
