No I just want 4 individual 4tb drives no raid I already have a Nas 4bay that can store 12tb data and I want a backup of that data from the nas you no just in case plus if the nas fails I can't recover my data off the working hdd's because of how it formatted the disks so I want file level copy's stored on these drives

I agree it could be the best idea my problem is that my nas encodes the drives in a way that Windows can't access. anything happed to my nas would mean data loss as Windows couldemt access the disks and when you put a hdd in my nas it formats the data so another data loss do you no of a nas that if I pulled the drives I would still be able to access the data via a Windows machine I don't like not being able to access my data directly off a hdd if the nas failed

All you have to do is boot a Linux CD to access simple EXT3 or EXT4 file system disks.

But my mb would need to be able to access 4tb drives and how simple would this be just a plug in load something like Ubuntu and see my files sort of thing if my mb could access 4tb disks wich it can't

and what about the software raid wouldent that stop me seeing my data because I don't no the raid parameters btw it's a readynas 104
