Hi friends,
I have a Lenovo S41 Laptop. I was watching a video in full screen yesterday, and my laptop battery went below 20% and started its "ultra power save mode" on its own. I don't know what it did, but my screen darkened and my backlit keyboard turned off, which is normal. But my sound entirely went off from my speakers, and all of my hotkeys/function keys stopped working. I've restarted multiple times, nothing. No drivers pertaining to this issue are available as of yet for Windows 10, and I can't get into my BIOS. Apparently, there is a button on the side of my laptop that you hold which starts up the laptop into BIOS; I found the hole, but there's no button inside of it, it's just totally flat metal. So that's a no go. I don't know what to do. I can't turn up, down, or mute my volume. I can't Fn + Spacebar to turn on my backlights, I can't adjust my brightness. I can't do anything and I can't seem to find a fix for this anywhere. Also, I should mention that my Windows key works fine, all Ctrl + whatever keys work fine. I'd say it's locked or something, but Fn + esc doesn't do anything for me either. Hopefully you wonderful people can help me out.

Thanks a lot :)

Disabling fast start up still didn't allow my into the BIOS from startup. I completely turned it off and on a few times and nothing. I also updated all of the chipset drivers and keyboard drivers and still nothing.

Sorry I am late to the game here, but maybe this will help out with those who have this problem. My laptop is locked so I cant even check BIOS. I did discover on my T440s that depressing the Esc+Fn keys activates/deactivates the hot key functionality. Thankfully, this time this solution worked.

To all of those who will come here in the future, Lenovo support couldn't fix it so I had to send it in for repair. They said it was a hardware problem, but didn't tell me specifically what it was.

This solution worked for me as well!
You have to press and hold Fn, then press Esc to toggle.

The problem with the fn key disable for me happend when i did a flash update on the bios system that was auto prompted in my win 10 environment. I have read alot of threads after this and nothing have helped. the only logical fix would be to revert to an older working bios but everyone refering to this says that it is not recommended so i tried to update to never versions instead hoping it woud fix the issue.

I am now at R05ET72W (1.50) and for the moment i am just tierd of it...

And no Fn+ESC Does not work for me and trying to blame this on the OS (W10) is not going to work since i have booted the computer in linux aswell and fn keys are still not responding. The software for handling this function is simply just not there in the newer versions of the bios.

I was able to finally get this fixed on my Brand new lenovo T470S I had the exact same problem with no control over the top function keys. I went into the Lenovo Vantage software which still worked by hitting f11. At that point I noticed that you could swap the f function key with the control key. I was able to control the function keys by using control I then had to go into advanced settings and select the function keys again plus swap the control key back to the function key. Sorry I cannot explain this better it was all by experimenting with the software provided. Anyways after about 30 mins everything is function correctly. good luck.

Have same problem.

Run system recovery few times and nothing worked.

I was extremaly angry on windows, so i run Linux Mint from pendrive to check if it is a hardweare malfunction. On Mint Fn sems to work fine. I rebot to windows and it just start working :)

Hi, since Windows 10 came, we have experienced 'micro bugs'. These bugs can be fixed running:
Powershell as admin (right click - open as admin).
1. DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /RestoreHealth
2. sfc /scannow

Lastly, restart sys.

If the DISM repair program from Microsoft does not work, running a reformat and clean install of the system will fix its micro bugs in most cases. These are caused by not running normal maintenance, which Win 10 is supposed to do on its own, on a regular basis.

To avoid micro bugs, run the DISM software (above steps) once per month.

Sincerely,
Michael
