Hey guys,

I have a brand new WD Blue that is unallocated in the disk management window. It says it is online. However, whenever I try to create a new simple volume it says "disk error (cyclic redundancy check)".

What is going on?

As this is a new drive, check to make sure the SATA cable is firmly in place, or try replacing it with a new cable. A CRC error means the data the computer is getting from the drive does not match the data that was originally sent to the drive when the data was written. If it happens continuously, either there's a problem with the data connection to the drive, or the drive is defective.

Yea it is all hooked up correctly. I guess I am just shocked a brand new drive (a day old) would be defective...but I guess it does happen. How can I ensure that the drive is indeed bad?

WD has a diagnostic tool called Data Lifeguard. Download and run that and see what it says about your drive. They usually require a copy of the output for you to RMA the drive.

If the diagnostic says the drive is defective and this is a recent purchase, I'd suggest just exchanging it at the store you got it from. The retail store will give you a new drive as a replacement. If you RMA it with WD, they will send you a refurbished drive as a replacement.

Edit: If your computer has extra SATA ports, try plugging the drive into a different SATA port. Just to rule out a motherboard problem.

Hi there CC268,

Sorry that you are facing some issues with your WD drive.

Basically, I would agree with Solandri and say that you first need to try attaching the drive with different cables to a different port. You will be a 100% sure whether there is something wrong with your system or the HDD itself if you just attach it to a different one.

In case the issue persists, you can just contact the place where you got it from or contact WD's Support and eventually RMA the drive: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=rFGdXB
