So this good 7970 (pre-Ghz edition) has worked great on my wife's computer for the last 2.5 years.

However, sometimes the computer would either shut off for no reason while unattended, or perhaps it was just the output from the card that did this.

Now, well, there is no image showing from either of the DVI ports, nor the HDMI one. But the computer still boots normally.

I am wondering if it's worth testing the card's DP output or if, given its hardware structure, no DVI and no HDMI means no DP?

Thanks

could be bad memory on your motherboard, bad psu not being able to power the gpu etc.

I would start with removing that gpu and using onboard if possible, if you get an image its not your memory.

if you have another gpu lying around that doesn't need as mush power, throw that in and see what happens

As I posted, the computer boots anyway with the 7970 as the sole display adapter (minus anything displayed on the screen), and it has always worked. The PSU is a Corsair TX 750, plenty powerful. I doubt it's the PSU, as if it were, it would have shut down while under heavy load, instead of working very well while gaming, and then suddenly displaying nothing while idling...

I installed the old GTX 460, and the computer works flawlessly with that, but gaming is severely limited, of course.

well your psu is plenty for that gpu it doesn't mean it isn't failing, I had similar issues with my 7970 when my 750w seasonic started failing. random reboots when under load etc, eventually it couldn't even power my gpu up and when swapping a gpu in that didn't need that much power it would boot fine. since it is booting with that gpu installed it may just be a bad gpu.

It can't be the GPU, as the computer clearly boots, recognizing the video card as functioning. It is whatever electronics are responsible for creating the signal for the DVI and HDMI outputs.

My whole question revolves around whether or not the DisplayPort output uses different circuitry or not, and thus, if there is any hope at all that the DP might work.

You doubt it. Fine.

I'm asking someone who KNOWS if I *MIGHT*.

you aren't going to get a For sure answer, you card should have came with a dp adapter or something, give it a try, it most likely will not work.

It however could not be the card, reseat that card in the first slot and put the 460 in the second slot and plug the monitor into the 460. check windows to see if it is actually seeing the gpu. check the power cables to the 7970, one of the connectors could be bad either on the gpu or on the psu.

if you do see the gpu you might get lucky with the dp but most likely not. might as well spend the 5 dollars for a non-active dp adapter and try it.

Oh, it's that cheap, I thought DP adapters were like $100 or something.

Thanks! I'll try that and report...

Turns out a dp adapter is over $20... I guess I'll just have to try the video card in other PCs... :(

You know, I would have thought that on a site with so many knowledgeable people, someone would be able to tell me if the circuitry that displays out of DP is different, and if so to what degree, from that which makes the DVI out... :(
