Should I wait for the 950 series or save the money and buy a 980ti instead?

I just bought an m.2 500gb os drive for my X99 build, and have 30days to use or not use it to refund. I got it for 190 bucks with taxes, and remembered that I was waiting for thr 950 series.

I do 3D rendering and graphic design, and was wondering if it's best to return this and just buy the 950 500gb m.2 when it comes out next month... Or.. Save the money and just buy a 980ti and stick with this 500gb m.2 I just bought?

If it's a choice between getting bleeding-edge storage technology or a powerhouse GPU like the 980ti......you should definitely go with the 980ti. The use cases where you're really going to enjoy that drive are narrow, and overall the GPU will be a much better place to put your money.

The mobo you have identified uses PCIe 2.0 x 2 speeds max for the m.2 slot, but the drive you have is not capable of that. To be honest, it is not significantly different performance-wise than the 2.5" SSD variant of the drive.

The 950pro however will be capable of making use of PCIe 3.0 x4 speeds, so the mobo will bottleneck the performance.

actually that X99 mobo has a PCI 3 x4 M.2 slot - taken from MSI's web "Turbo M.2: delivering next generation M.2 Gen3 x4 performance with transfer speeds up to 32 Gb/s"

but what geekwad said about the EVO M.2 is correct - that M.2 SSD will still be limited to SATA speeds, which means somewhere in mid 500 MB/s read and similiar in write speeds. THe newer PCIe M.2 SSDs are capable of far higher read/write speeds - in the case of the samsung 950 PRO, current specs show 2500 MB/s read, 1500 MB/s write for the 512 GB variant

it would be a waste of that M.2 socket to use it for the EVO M.2, imho

Sorry, I'm new to indpeth storage knowlegde, but could you ellaborate on the bottleneck the board might give if I bought the m.2 950 pro?

by 980Ti it appears you're referring to a graphics card? not sure how one equates to the other

as to whether you should return it to buy a 950 Pro - re-read my second paragraph in my response, the 950 Pro has speeds that are 5x faster read, and 3x faster write than the EVO M.2 SSD you said you had already purchased.

Installation of a PCIe SSD can be cumbersome and tricky, and may not be best for you if you're that much of a newbie at DIY computer building. just to be clear, the EVO M.2 SSD is a SATA SSD, which is what we've all used up to now. THe PCIe M.2 SSD use AHCI or NVMe protocol, which is different, to keep it simple. The EVO M.2 will install as the OS drive in "legacy" fashion, ie as you're probably used to.

The Original Ralph... It's more, w/c one would benefit me more for what I'll be using it for. GPU or Storage? Now, if I do feel like buying the 950 down the road, I probably will... But for now I think I'm agreeing w/ Geekwad, the 980ti gets me more for what I need.

True Geekwad, I do believe that I would benefit a lot more w/ a 980ti, than a storage.

Chances are, by next year, the 950 would probably be worth less than 300.
