my motherboard is
gateway rs780
whats the best cpu I can/should get for gaming

what is it not compatible with?

I want to spend about 500 canadian on a graphics card all this is for gaming and some graphics work/game design.

Can I upgrade my ram and to what? I'm at 8 gigs I'd like to get to at least 16 in case I need it.

I dont really want to overclock because I can't afford to replace equipment.

Got windows 10, thanks to the microsoft gods.
Sounds like the damage is pretty bad. Do you think I need to start over and just have them build me a custom computer? I know I need a new powersupply/everything. At this rate feels like all I'm saving is the case it's a
gateway dx4300

I'm willing to spend upwards of 1500 Canadian on the whole setup.

Do you mean what is the best CPU you can get for the current Gateway RS780 Socket-AM2 AMD motherboard you currently have?

You can't run an Intel CPU on an old AMD motherboard (or a new AMD motherboard for that matter). That's an old AM2+ motherboard and while AM3 (not AM3+) CPUs can run on AM2+ motherboards, motherboards for prebuilts tend to be much pickier and getting it to work with anything it doesn't specify is a gamble. Of the CPUs it officially supports, the most recent and powerful CPUs would be Phenom x4 9000 series CPUs released in 2007-2008 (and only the 95W ones, not the 125W ones).

So yes, you will absolutely have to upgrade your motherboard to run a 5th or 6th generation i5. You'll also have to buy new RAM (you're using DDR2 RAM which has long-since been phased out) and if you have not replaced the original power supply, you're going to need to replace that as well before you install a $500 GPU.

Also leave some room in your budget for an OS if you're still using the OEM version that came with your PC when you bought it.

With that budget, then yeah, I'd definitely start over. You can get a great build going for $1500 loonies :)

by new setup you mean bite the bullet and build from scratch?

You have the budget for a whole new build! Realistically, upgrading 7-8 year old prebuilts isn't a really good idea.

I do recommend building your own or if you're unwilling to do that, finding a local shop to assemble the parts for you. Those prebuilts tend to be really bad values - you not only get less overall performance for the dollar, they also tend to saddle you with iffier power supplies and motherboards
