Looking to upgrade to my graphics card for the new wave of games that i wont be able to run beyond low quality, currently using a geforce gt 640 1gb ddr5 card.

Looking for a reasonable priced geforce card that will see me though the next generation of games and would prefer not to spend 400$ on a card.

While browsing ive noticed most cards better than my current one require external power cables and was just wondering how i would go about checking if i even have outlets required for such a cable. or if better cards exists that can work fine with just the pci slots power.

feel free to link me posts to reasonably priced cards (strongly prefer geforce as radeon has given me many problems in the past)

well, if you want a card thats going to last for a while, its going to be expensive. also, keep in mind that CPU's can bottleneck a graphics card, meaning that if you have a crappy cpu and a great graphics card, games will still run crappy because the processor can only handle so much. and the External power cables? probably the 6 and 8 pin connectors. you can google image that to see if you have those on your power supply in your pc. You would need to open up your case to see if you have the right connections. right now tho for choosing the graphics card. the GTX 970's are amazing cards for under 400 dollars. but it is running really close to the budget. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814487088&cm_re=gtx_970-_-14-487-088-_-Product

this card will definately run almost any game on max settings, as long as you got a good processor to go with it.(By any game, i mean every game except ark).
I am currently running a GTX 770 with AMD fx 8350, and can pull 300+ frames in LOL. 300 -700 Frames in Minecraft, 200 FPS in GTA5. etc.. soo a 970 will definately be a good card for a long time.
So, if you wanna go the cheaper route, you can get a card like the 770 or 780 and still be able to run plenty of games with great quality. and you can SLI them later if you decide, which would give you twice the power.
link to refurbished (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814125614) this is around 220 bucks..
you can also find a larger variety of 770's or 780's on Ebay, if you're willing to buy from that website. stick to manufacturers that are known for graphics, like ASUS Gigabyte MSI EVGA etc..

If you have a MicroCenter near you, they have refurbished GTX 770's on sale for $200. Very solid cards and I am still enjoying mine at 1080p.

Find the model of your power supply and I could tell you if you have the needed cables, if you don't and wish to avoid a new power supply, you can always go for a GTX 750ti for about $120, great for medium settings at 1080p.

To air on the safe side, you could go with a 750ti, there are plenty that don't require external power cables to run and are pretty good for 1080p gaming, and definitely better than your 640 by a pretty large margin.

Yeah, its somewhere around twice as good i believe. and after some research i know my motherboard does not support crossfire or anything of the like. I am not certain if my psu has 6/8 or any pin connectors for a video card.

i thought it was up to my psu if it had the outlets for it or not, or does it plug into the mobo...ive never ventured outside of plug and play video cards, i was a console kid up until the xbox 360, dont get me wrong i loved pc gaming it was just quite expensive to get into until the last 5-6 years or so, people talk bad about my current computer saying its not as good as it should/could be, but for 400$ i think i did damn good :p, it will certainly perform on par if not better than the ps4 and xb1. for nearly the same price.
