This is a brand new card that I upgraded to and has been used less than a week. The high temperatures do concern me and the fan makes loud noises during certain RPMs. Is there something wrong with my card or do they just generally run this hot?

It generally just runs hot. Those temps are not at all surprising.

Best thing to do is to ensure you've got a very good case cooling setup to help keep the temps in the case under control.

What kind of case do you have, and are there any open fan slots available?

Interesting.

I would say 85c is pretty high for a 270X card.
But as said via the other poster, a lot of it does depend on what type of case you have your 270 card in.
If it`s a small form factor, and not a large Atx style case with not many options to fit case fans in things will heat up quickly including the 270 card you have. This can happen from time to time, and just luck of the draw. There will always be a percentage of cards that have very small faults with them such as improper fitting of the cooler or thermal application layer between the cooling solution of the card and the Gpu of the graphics card it`s self. It does happen from time to time.

If you do have space in the case to fit about two or four 120mm fans then you should fit some.
In what we call a push, pull config.

Air being drawn in from the front of the case and air pushed out from the back or the top of your case.
Have a look around for reviews of your model of card you have via google and see what the test results reveal on average with the 270 card running under game testing ect see if the results match or are near the temps you are experiencing with the 270 card you have in your system.

If it worries you and turns out your temps are a bit high then simply send the new card back under warranty and rma procedure and ask for a replacement. in some cases the cooler is not factory fitted well enough so you end up with higher running temps on the card.

It's one of these old server style pc cases; with slots for 6 hard drives. I have two 120mm fans already installed; one pulling air in and one on the back as an exhaust. There is space for a fan on the side but I need to get a fan cable splitter as my motherboard only has space for two 3-pin fans. I was extremely concerned when it hit 95 degrees and I noticed an odor; was worried the card is running much too hot. The computer has recently been cleaned of any dust.

Then I would say since it`s a big case and you have fans fitted.
And the 270 card hitting 95c to Rma the card. just to be safe.

Put it this way I run a 7970 card, that is in fact more powerful than a 270 card.
And never hits close to 95c tops out at 70c, and requires more power.

Hello,

We're sorry you are having issues with your 270x cooler. 85'C is well within range, however, its a sign that something is starting to fail.

"fan makes loud noises during certain RPM" that is probably the cause. We can send out free replacement fans to fix this issue (assuming its not sucking a cable into the fan). Please PM me your ticket # from xfxsupport.com or your serial # and return shipping address. If you're in the Americas, i can send out a free part.
