Will AM3+ mobos compatible with next gen Zen processors like AM3 was compatible with AM2+ mobos?

I know when I was building my first pc AM2 was the socket i was intending to use until AM2+ came out and I instantly wanted it because AM3 processors were supported on them(at the cost of not being able to use DDR3.) Is this going to be a thing when "zen" or what ever is next for the AM socket comes out? Do we even know for sure that Zen is AM4?

No, AMD has stated the Zen will be AM4, in fact all AMD CPU's and APU's will use that socket. It was originally expected that the socket would be known as FM3, but AMD went with the AM4 name instead, it will be the first AMD socket with DDR4 compatibility.

AM3+ is pretty ancient at this point, The last major releases were almost 3 years ago.

While the next socket may be called AM4 I would seriously doubt any chance of backwards compatibility. Don't forget their most recent socket for their newest technology is FM2+ which is not compatible with it.

I completely understand that. Just like AM3 was also the first AMD socket to use DDR3. However, as I said, AM2+ socket mobos were able to use AM3 socket CPUs with DDR2 memory. Besides, I don't want to have to pay for DDR4 and a new AM4 mobo if i have 24 gigs of DDR3 and a AM3+ mobo right here.

At this point I don't even have hope that they will work together. I'm just curious if there's solid reasons that AM3+ mobos will not run a AM4. If not why even call it AM3+ in the first place? It really is confusing how they dream up these names and stuff for these products that seem ordered and logical until they just throw away logic and do something else.

As I understand it, it will be like Intel's socket, you can't run a 1151 CPU in a 1150 socket. Probably due to feature sets and among other things. Zen is supposed to offer a whole new set of tech for AMD, new arch and unified socket (both APU's and CPU's in the same socket.)

Going to have to wait a bit to see exactly what they do, but I distinctly remember them saying that AM4 CPU's will only work in an AM4 socket.
