can i back up my mac with the WD Passport?

I thought I did a backup last year (I rarely use my computer) on my Passport WD. Today I connected the WD Passport and it states it hasn't been backed up nor do I have options to command the WD Pass to back up. *ODD* The WD Passport feels like it's "running", but I don't see an alert for it working on my laptop. FRUSTRATING !!

Sorry to hear about the issues you're having with your drive. How did you backup your data? Do you need to recover it, or you want to find out if the drive is having issues. First you should try the drive with a different computer and a different USB cable, to see if the same thing happens.
If you want to try and backup your files again, here's a link with instructions on how to do that by using Time Machine: How to backup data using Time Machine on Mac OSX. On the other hand it would be wise to check the drive for errors before that. Follow the instructions from this tutorial: How to test a drive for defects or problems on a Mac
