[SOLVED] Need help connecting a gateway and Switch over Wi-Fi

My home network has a 4G connection to access the internet which I share with all the computers (wired and wireless). This is a rough network diagram.

Huawei B880-70V is the 4G LTE Gateway. It provides DHCP services and Wi-Fi connectivity to the entire network. This is then connected to the DLink DSL-2640U router which I am using as a switch (DHCP and Wi-Fi disabled) with an Ethernet cable. Devices which require a wired connection are connected to the DLink switch. All wired and wireless devices are on the same subnet.

My question is is it possible to connect the Huawei gateway and the DLink Switch over Wi-Fi instead of the physical connection shown by the red arrow?

Thanks in advance

Set up the DLink as a wireless access point.

Should be able to do so unless you encountered some problem.

Check the tutorials and if things do not work please post accordingly.

Should the DLink have the same SSID, password and channel as the Huawei gateway? If so will the DLink connect to the Huawei gateway automatically once I configure the 3 settings mentioned above?

Actually you are setting up an extender/repeater once the red-arrow physical connection is removed.

Yes to all your questions but there is a bit more to do.

Especially with respect to the configuring the IP addresses.

Here:

Just be careful with your IP address assignments if using any static IP's. The link above uses the 192.168.1.1 range. Just use the same addressing with respect to whatever range being used by the Huawei gateway. You mentioned subnets so I have the sense that you have some understanding of the address scheme being used.

Plan it out and please post any further questions. Lots of good folks available to help around here if things go astray.

I tried what you said.
SSID, password and channel set to be the same on both the Dlink and the Huawei devices.
4G gateway runs the DHCP server. DHCP disabled on the Dlink router.
4G gateway and the Dlink router were assigned static ip addresses within the same subnet, but outside the DHCP pool.

Then once I remove the "red arrow link" it does not work. I tried to ping the 4G gateway from one of the PCs connected to the Dlink router's LAN port. But I got "destination host unreachable" errors.

Thanks. A few things please:

Confirm the Model number on the Huawei. I am looking for its' default IP. I.e., the IP address you would use to access the Huawei's configuration pages via a browser.

What is your internal IP addressing scheme? Do not need or want the IP address provided by your ISP.

Can you provide the "ipconfig /all" output from one of the PC's connected to the Dlink router? Actually two outputs: one with the "red arrow" link in place and working. One without the "red arrow" link when attempting wireless connectivity.

Do the Dlink router's admin pages provide a listing/map of connected devices?

What IP address(es) are you using to ping?

Back tracking a bit as I must have missed something. Thanks.

Adding on to my previous post as a follow-up:

I did find some specs for the Huawei B880 series.

It appears that the various "branch models" use different frequencies.

Are you sure that the Hauwei and DLink can both use the same frequency and that they are both on that frequency? Any regional/country settings?

Same for the wireless security settings - all matched up between the two?

I was not able to accomplish what I wanted with only the 4G gateway and the DLink switch. I bought a Vonets VAR11N-300. It cost me around USD15 and was worth the price as it could be used as a router, repeater or a bridge.
By connecting it to a device with an Ethernet port, the device could be connected through WiFi. I was able to connect the switch to the gateway that way.

Here is the link to it
