Hi all, I've recently started looking into temperatures of my Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600, which is currently at 2.4ghz, as I'm thinking of overclocking it. I've used Core Temp to look at the temperatures and at idle the cores sit at around 45°C, and when under load they reach over 80°C, this is with air cooling + stock CPU cooler. I've looked at other forums and found that this is over the recommended amount for my CPU. I've looked at different CPU coolers to get and found this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA6J332N5216 Can anyone tell me if this is a decent cooler for it's price, or recommend any other methods of cooling/coolers that are preferably no more than $50? Thanks.

Solution
Yes. Sustained Core temperatures of 80C is too hot for the B3, as well as the G0.

The CM Hyper 212 EVO should give you enough cooling capacity to get your B3 down to 70C max.

What is your ambient temperature?

Grifent,

There are 2 different variants of the Q6600:

Q6600 - Stepping Revision G0, TDP 95 Waats, Tcase 71C
Q6600 - Stepping Revision B3, TDP 105 Waats, Tcase 62C

The G0 Stepping is the newer variant, and is a better overclocker, many of which can reach 3.6GHz at 9 x 400 FSB. Maximum recommended Vcore is 1.5.

For the G0, here's the normal operating range for Core temperature:

80C Hot (100% Load)
75C Warm
70C Warm (Heavy Load)
60C Norm
50C Norm (Medium Load)
40C Norm
30C Cool (Idle)

Core temperatures in the mid 70's are safe.

For the B3, Core temperatures in the mid 60's are safe.

You'll need at least a Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO, as dudio has shown in his link.

Use CPU-Z to identify your processor, which will determine how you should approach overclocking, Core temperatures and cooling.

I just checked and found that I have the B3 revision, so does this mean I could be damaging my CPU if it continues to run at 80°C under load?

About 24°C. Also, can you recommend any other good CPU coolers in the same price area because I live in Australia and I haven't found the one you mentioned available in any store here.
