i7-950 to i7-6700k... worthwhile?

Hey all

I am an avid gamer, and have recently got the a case of the "should i upgrades"..

Was wondering do I fork out the cash and upgrade to a newer rig?

Current rig:
i7-950 - not OC'd
ASUS Rampage Xtreme 3
12GB DDR3 1600mhz
SLi GTX670 4gb
SSD blah blah blah

Was thinking of:
i7 6700K with CoolerMaster Nepton 280L Liquid CPU Cooler
ASUS S1151 ATX Sabertooth Z170 Mark 1
16GB DDR4 Corsair CMK16GX4M4A2400C14 (4x4G) 2400MHz Vengeance LPX BLACK RAM

1000 Watt Corsair RM1000 PSU

Would i notice a significant increase in gaming performance? none of my friends have gone skylake yet so I have nothing to compare it with.. the 1st gen is still holding its ground relatively well..

help?

you would most definitely see a performance gain. more so from the GPU upgrade as far as gaming goes. if your CPU is still sufficient for your needs, i see no need in upgrading it at all.

is it just an itch or do you actually see a reason to seek better performance?

The CPU + RAM upgrade would probably make a 10 ~ 20fps difference depending on the game, however the GPU upgrade would be the main factor that increases the gaming performance.

Also yes the upgrade will give you a big boost in gaming performance and you will be very pleased to see it.

Honestly unless you know that you are power user or you know you will use all 16 GB 8 GB is more than enough for gaming. 1000W is a complete overkill.

Thats part of what I am asking here.. I feel that it is a bit of an itch that is justified at the same time..

I am by no means a hardware guru or claim that I understand all the jargon involved however given that my computer is still 1st gen i7, the improvements on architecture and hyperthreading, PCIe, M.2 compatibility etc. would be a drastic improvement?

Given that it is a 6700K i am also taking into consideration what overclocking will bring to the table in terms of future proofing my new rig.

Currently playing GTA5 is acceptable but by no means highest settings and there is what i perceive as CPU lag in some instances, Witcher 3 runs OK.. I guess what I am saying is I am not "unhappy" with my current rig, but trying to gauge exactly how much of an improvement I would get if i got the new machine to justify the cost..

I am eagerly awaiting the release of The Division and it would be good to have a machine that would handle the Snowdrop engine in all its glory..

Thanks for the detailed answer! I was shocked when I saw your prices but the realized they were in USD.. im in Aus and the prices are.. well a lot more..

Just curious though - I've always been told to stay away from AMD GFX cards as their drivers are pretty horrible and cause a lot of crashes etc. Has this been mostly resolved? I've always gone nvidia and never had a problem

$2000AUD max, preferably closer to $1500AUD

I agree on the AMD. Thinking of keeping my 670s for the moment and upgrading GPU at a later date
