I I have a Canon pixma 892 printer. It has separate cartridges for C, M, Y and two for black. It seems like every day it tells me that one or another of the ink cartridges is out, and it won't print until I replace it. I don’t think the cartridge is really empty, how does it know whether the cartridge is empty or not? And why can’t I just print until I am not satisfied with the color? I only want to print in black, so why does it matter whether the color cartidges are empty or not? I feel like the printer is programmed to make me buy more ink than I really need.

There's an electronic chip on each cartridge which conveys information to the printer which in turn is sent to the printer software.
Consider buying cheaper compatible cartridges or a continuous ink system.
