is there a way to make the Motorola SBG6580 act like a router ONLY?

Weird. http://www.surfboard.com/products/sbg6580/

I'm not sure how configurable the modem/router aspect is since companies usually lock down their firmwares sometimes so you can't do much with it. If you own it, I'd sell it and buy a proper router.

What netgear were you looking at buying?

If SBG6580 cannot be used as a router then i have to get the netgear listed on TWC approved modems (with integrated router) else the one with the modem only

I always go modem only and then my own router. You have better control and it's not all your devices in one box. Plus I've always hated devices like that because if one part die, the whole thing is useless. Like those DVD/TV combos. When the laser dies on the DVD player, now you have a TV with half a broken device built in.
