I wonder if i can set the AHCI option on a Asus Z97-AR separately for each SATA port in the BIOS. I've got two ssds that of course support this option but and old DVD/RW drive from 2008 that don't, I would like to set the it's port to IDE instead. Is it's possible? .

This doesn't answer your question, but keep in mind that a new optical drive is only a $15 or $20 purchase if all else fails.

But according to page 2-38 of your motherboard's manual, it appears all SATA headers are set universally.

Odd that the optical drive doesn't work at all. I had one once that refused to boot when set to SATA. I had to move it to the 3rd party SATA header and set that to IDE.

In fact, that is probably the reason. SATA mode is not setting the headers, it is setting the CPU. The only boards I've seen that allowed separate SATA modes for the headers were ones that had a 2nd SATA chipset in the form of a 3rd party device. Those headers were controlled by the chipset and the rest by the CPU.

So should i move it to a third party SATA port aswell? But more importantly, how do i set that to IDE? I'll do some research, meanwhile i'm sending this question directly to Asus and see what they have to say about it.:)

Yep unfortunately you're right on that one. Maybe i can connect my DVD drive to the COM-port somehow, i'll look into it.
