I've looked at many different threads around here, and none seemed to fix my problem. As stated in the title, my Nextbook Flexx 11 won't read my external hard drive. The device doesn't show up under My Computer, or disk management, but it does show up under device management. The drivers are up to date according to the device management, and as far as I can tell there isn't actually anything wrong with the hard drive itself.

Here's a history of what I've done with everything so far, since I literally just got this stuff:
Sept. 23rd: ordered the Nextbook and hard drive.
Sept. 28th: received my order, unboxed, installed windows 10.

Yeah, that's it. I can't figure out what's wrong with the devices, as the two ought to be compatible (I didn't check with windows 8 before installing windows 10).

I've read other threads on other sites about how people have got their Nextbooks to read external devices, so I'm fairly positive it should work.

In case this information is pertinent:

OS: Windows 10
CPU: Intel® Atom Quad-Core / 1.8GHz (Z3735F)
Ram: 2 GB DDR3L

For more information, here's the link to Nextbook's site for this device:

I can put together a computer like *snap* but when it comes to running, I always seem to have some issue or another. Thanks in advance for help, if you need more info, just let me know.

I am having the same issue with a 2tb Toshiba external HD. The problem is the USB port doesn't supply enough current to power the drive fully. You have a couple options. You can use a powered USB hub, or a USB Y-cable. These are often sold on eBay for a couple dollars. The USB Y-cable connects 2 USB ports together to a single USB A female port to supply sufficient current to power the drive fully.

Hey there, Draego.

I'd recommend that you try the drive with a different USB cable (preferably shorter than 12") and a different computer, to see if the same thing happens. You could also try to uninstall it from Device Manager and then reconnect it, so that Windows can install its drivers again, to see if this fixes the problem. I'd also suggest that you try a different external drive with your nextbook, to see if it works properly. You should download the HDD manufacturer's diagnostics tool (or a 3rd party diagnostics tool if the manufacturer doesn't offer one) and test the drive, to see what's the situation with it and if any errors pop-up.

Hope that helps. Please let me know how everything goes.

Sorry for the late reply, we've been dealing with flooding in the SC, USA area. I'll answer each of these one at a time.
I don't think I can use a different USB cable, or at least I'm not sure where to find one. The In for the hard drive looks like two separate things, and the cable has both attached for one tip.
I uninstalled from Device Manager, reinstalled, and nothing changed.
I don't have another external to try on mine ^^'
Not sure where to get the HDD diagnostics for this one, I checked around, and didn't find anything useful that Webroot didn't label as a threat (If somebody knows one that works, that would be FANTASTIC).

Thank you for the help, I am quite sorry that my results didn't provide any further information :/ I have tried my hard drive on a laptop running windows 7, and it worked fine. I'll try to find a different hard drive from a friend to try that out, and post again with new results.

Edit: I have tried another external hard drive, and had the exact same results

Hmm, it all points to some sort of incompatibility issue with your laptop. Which is most likely related to the OS. I've seen some similar problems with recently updated computers to Windows 10. Perhaps it's some sort of a driver issue, having in mind the HDD works fine with a Windows 7 computer and you've had the same result with a different external HDD. Try updating or rolling back the version of your USB drivers, to see if that changes anything. If that doesn't work, perhaps an OS update (if available) might fix the problem.
Even though the issue doesn't seem to be directly related to the HDD, here's an article with legitimate HDD diagnostics programs (both brand related and 3rd party ones) for future reference: http://pcsupport.about.com/od/toolsofthetrade/tp/tophddiag.htm
