~500 euro budget? 980 ti or 390x now and CF later?

Hi everyone,

I need to buy a video card for my sistem, since my 290x died in a DYI project :)
System: Asus z97-k. I5 4690k stock & Prolimatech Genesis. (i also have a Corsair H110 but i`m not using it.) Samsung 850 Evo 120gb. Corsair Air 540, Corsair AX1200i)
Right now i have a Samsung 32" 1440p 60hz VA monitor that`s more than decent. I have never gamed on a 144hz one (and i`m affraid to, cuz i might want one after that :)) and so far, i`m satisfied with this one. When Oculus Rift will come up, i`ll buy it. I also like the 3x Lg 34" curved 4k x144p setup but i think (hope) that Oculus will make that redundant.
I play mostly Witcher 3 and Project Cars. Waiting for Fallout 4.
I am not a fanboy, i always bought the best bang/buck, a little bit inclined for the "bang" part. I also hunt for great deals on the seccond hand market, cards with original manufacturer`s warranty. I live in the south of France, Monaco. The SH website here is www.leboncoin.fr
Now the dillema: Should i buy a 980 Ti for about 550 euros - the safe choice that will probably be good enough for Oculus,
OR should i buy a Sapphire 390x with ~330 euros and when Oculus launches, to buy another one and CF them? (my MB doesn`t support SLI, so 970 is kinda` out of the question)
I have ~500 euro budget right now. I`ve never had CF, but i saw that 390x scales very well and w/o problems. Power draw isn`t such a big problem.
Even tho i`d want my first ultra premium video card - 980 ti, it`s pretty hard to get one. Most of the offers are in the other side of the country and sending money and waiting to receive it is risky. Also, 980 ti might be overkill for 1440p 60hz.
Also, i have that H110 and Corsair HG10 wich should also fit on the 390x since it`s the same pcb as the 290x.

Thanks for all the answers!

I would at first say the 980ti because of the better performance. Also there is no hassle with CF, since CF sometimes doesn't work or has performance problems.

Specifically though for Witcher 3 a single GTX 980ti cannot keep a solid 60 fps, so if you are keen on getting max settings at >60 fps/1440p on it only the 390x CF option will do. Also the CF 390x has that 8gb ram which is good for higher resolutions.

Don't forget crossfire or SLI doesn't add the RAM together as each card needs all textures because they interchange frames - so it's still 4 GB RAM - and BTW thats plenty of vieo RAM for games.
I do agree that CF or SLI has problems with some games and others don't even support both. I'd get a Fury x if I were you and had the money. No noise and good for high resolutions. I am a bit of an AMD video card fan though :)

Even tho my last video cards were 290x, 290x, 280x, HD4850, i`m not an AMD fan :))
About the Fury X, it was my first option, mostly because of the CF issue. I would buy one now and another one after oculus or multi screen, BUT i can`t seem to find one at ~500 euro anymore. Only at 700, and i`m not paying that much for a card that`s 5-10% weaker than the 980 Ti.
I think that the best move for now it would be to get a 390x (which would be enough for 1440p) for around 330e, and buy another one when needed (or sell it for 270 and buy whatever is best buy then)

I agree with you, and the price of those cards does seem to be going up... Just keep in mind that crossfire/sli doesn't work for all games (most FPS do work).

well, the 390x had no warranty@ 350 euro, so i didn`t buy it. A factory refurbished one on Amazon.fr is 382e... but that`s a bit much.
Perhaps i`ll buy a Gtx 970 with 250e, use it for a while and later sell it for 200 and buy what`s best, after Oculus launches. I`ll also have way more money after i start working in my new country :)
I think it will do decently on 1440P 60Hz in Witcher and Project Cars and Grid autosport.
