Built a new pc. Could not find my win 7 pro disk, but had win 7 enterprise. Installed that one, but I don't want to put in the product key for my company, would rather use Pro or just go out and buy a windows 10 license. But now that I have installed windows 7 enterprise am I stuck? Can I upgrade a non-registered Windows 7 enterprise to Windows 10? Or better yet, downgrade the Windows 7 enterprise to windows 7 pro? But in any case, do i have to enter a valid product key for the Win 7 enterprise before any change to the operating system?

Thanks!

Solution
An enterprise license cannot be up/down graded to any other. A clean installation with the version that you have a valid license for (enterprise is not a valid license for an individual) is the only way.

Ugh. Really do not want to re-install as I spent two days installing custom software!

Can I buy a windows 7 enterprise license by itself to install? Is this type of website legit? http://www.go2keys.com/windows-7-enterprise-sp1-p-57.html

??? again i have the Win 7 enterprise product key but I do not want to use my firm's license, would rather buy a new one. So if there is a better or more reputable license to buy for under $100 I would prefer that

thanks

I do have a valid license. I just do not want to go through the corporate hassle of getting my company to document my use of this product key. Instead I am willing to buy a new license. So its a question of 1) can i do a new install/upgrade without having this version authenticated -- if the answer is NO to that, then ir seems my best option is - install my corporate product key - do an upgrade to WIn 10 pro or something and release the original corporate license.

assuming of course i can't just buy an existing win 7 enterprise license out there (or win 7 ultimate) -- really do not want to go to win 10...

Win 7 Enterprise cannot be Upgraded to Win 10 via the normal means. They expect the IT staff to do this.
And Upgrading to Win 10 (even if it were possible) would not 'release the original corporate license' (or any other license).

You don't get to release the license used to qualify for an upgrade product for reuse elsewhere, just because you upgraded.

Your initial post is a tad bit misleading, which is what leads to the confusion. You say you built a new PC, but really, a PC without an operating system is pretty useless. What you did was assembled the hardware for a new PC, and are now in the market for an OS. You should figure the cost of the OS into the price of the system.

If you have a valid Windows 7 Pro license, there are two scenarios. Retail or OEM. OEM licenses do not carry transfer rights while retail licenses do. You should be able to determine if you even have the rights to reuse that license.
