I recently tried out a Motorola Surfboard, but it just didn't do what I need. I'd love to stop paying Comcast for their equipment, but extending the range and signal strength of the WiFi is priority. I've researched a lot of devices, but I don't know what the best option is.

1. Find a good gateway/router/telephony device that has good range, penetration and strength.
2. Buy a WiFi access point, hook it to my Comcast box and disable the WiFi from Comcast.
3. Buy a router/AP and disable everything from Comcast box and turn it into a "dumb" modem.
4. Buy a full on router/AP and leave the Comcast box as-is. Then run stuff off the 2nd router.

My concerns with each are:
1. Service compatibility. 2. Too many device options 3. Making it work. 4. Speed/Performance

I've read a lot of individuals experiences, technical stuff, and forums, but it's the internet and too much contradicts the other. I'm hoping someone can give me some good advice, technical know-how and recommendations on equipment.

Solution
I would just demand a different model. They DO have them and they HAVE to provide you one. If they claim they don't, they're lying.
How many stories/sq ft is this home/office? I hate giving Comcast money as much as anyone but for general consumer grade networking equipment I think it's worth it. Consumer grade modems/routers are for the most part crap and even the expensive ones degrade after just 2-3 years. Unless someone has specific wireless needs, I recommend the rental equipment for most of my clients. If you don't like the one you have or need an upgrade, you have the right to demand newer equipment from your ISP

The home is around 2000 sq. ft. on the first floor, and 800 sq. ft on the second. The Comcast box is currently located on one end of the home, but I lack cable lines in most of the other rooms. I'm talking with an outside contractor to get costs on dropping a new line (Comcast screws you over such things). I have spoken with Comcast about a newer device from them, but the one I was referred to, Arris TG862G, has horrible reviews, which don't give me much confidence in fixing my situation.

There is in fact a question on this forum about the exact same router/modem having speed issues.
