They r9 390 and gtx 970 are within a few fps of each other at 1080p. Depends on the game. However, the 390 has 8 gigs of ram this helps with a bit of peace of mind about future game titles. Also, when playing above 1080p the 390 is a clear winner.

I am actually saving up for a 390 right now for use with the oculous rift. Which will have closer to a 1440p resolution than 1080p.
