Do I need an adapater or can I just connect the 8 pin cable to the 4 pin atx plug?

BTW, mobo is an b85m-e and the psu is a corsair cx500

The six pic PCIe connector (there is no 6 pic CPU power connector) is not compatible with the CPU slot. It shouldn't go in, but to be safe, don't try to force it. Theoretically, if the power supply actually doesn't have a proper CPU power connector, then you could use an adapter (the wires are the same, just in a different orientation).

It is possible that the CPU connector is an eight pin connector instead of a double 4 (two linked 4 pins). Either way, that plug can be connected to the motherboard even without an adapter. However, there is also a similar 8 pin PCIe connect and they are not the same. Check with the manufacturer's website if the PSU's cables are not marked. You can also look at the wikipedia or some other site Google finds for an 8 pin PCIe and an 8 pin CPU to compare them and see the difference.

Notice that the two connectors are basically reversed in wire configuration. They also have different power ratings: 150W for the pcie, 288W for the EPS12V.

Doesn't matter as both should be wired the same.
