Hello,

I've just built my first desktop and am thrilled with the result, with the sole exception that my internet connection is junk. A wired connection is impossible in the location I have my desktop, so I was forced to go wireless with a TP-Link WDN4800 PCI express adapter.

Using this card, my wireless connection is inconsistent and on average much slower than every other device in the apartment. I hauled the desktop over to the wireless gateway and connected via ethernet to ensure it wasn't the modem, and hit speeds of 180 Mbps. When using wifi at my desk, though, I get no more than 20 Mbps, and often 0.5 with regular drop outs. Every other wifi device I own has no similar issues.

Here are some numbers (wifi all taken from the same location where my desktop is located):

Desktop, wired: 180 Mbps
Desktop, wifi: 11-20 Mbps
Windows 10 Laptop, wifi: 70 Mbps
Moto X: 50 Mbps
Nexus 9: 50 Mbps

Here's my hardware:

Xfinity Gateway 1 (TG862G)
- 802.11 g/n; WPA-PSK2 AES; Channel 11

Desktop:
CPU: i5 4690k
Mobo: MSI Z97 PCMate
WLan: TP-Link WDN4800.
OS: Windows 10 Pro 64 bit

I've installed the most recent Atheros drives for the wireless adapter, and have set the desktop in various places (on the desk, under the desk, near the desk), but there seems to be no difference.

Any suggestions on how I can improve my wifi performance would be greatly appreciated!!

I still don't understand why my desktop was suffering such low wifi performance, but I've decided to ditch the wireless lan card and go with a wireless repeater connected to the desktop via ethernet. The speed still isn't great (max about 45 Mbps when other devices are pulling 70+ off wifi), but it is far more stable than wifi alone.
