PC Shutdown during certain games - confirming suspicions

Hey,

So I've been experiencing what seems to be a hard reboot during particular games. The ones I've noticed it in are Rocket League and Cities Skylines. So far no other games have a particularly big effect on it, especially not the games which're more demanding on the CPU (such as Arma or GTA V). I've had this PC for about 2 years so I'm somewhat surprised that this issue has come up so soon.

I've run a series of tests with Furmark, Unigine Heaven and 3DMark a few times and I don't think it's a GPU overheating issue, I've been monitoring the temps in those games and it tends to go higher than most other games but nowhere near the dangerous areas for the card (games like GTA and Payday tend to sit at around 65 degrees, Cities and Rocket League can go up to 75). I've tested it all at different fan speeds, from letting the card manage itself, then gradually up to 80% which is as far as I'll let my GPU fans go.

I've done some tests on my CPU to ensure that isn't the issue, Furmark kicks up the cores to be a little warmer than I'd like them to be but again - nothing dangerous. They don't exceed 70 degrees.

So I think my initial suspicion is correct, I think it's a PSU issue. But I'm not entirely sure as to why it'd only reboot in certain games and not all of them when it's under load? Is it just an optimisation issue with those games or is it an issue with my hardware?

For those that want it, I use these:

- MSI GTX 770 Twin Frozr (no manual OC)
- i5 3570k (no OC)
- Corsair CXM 500W
- Crucial 8GB DDR3 (just the one stick for now)
- ASRock Z75 Pro3

I've got a spare Hyper 212 Evo in my house somewhere that I'm going to use to cool my CPU a little more, just in case. I'm that paranoid type, y'see. I also don't want to replace anything because I don't have the money to spare on a new part right now.

So, just in case I'm wrong, is there anything else it could potentially be? I didn't think it'd be a memory issue, but if it's potentially causing it then I can run some memory tests.

If it is the PSU, I'm going to probably go for an 800W PSU so I can ready up for future ugprades to my GPU and CPU, so what would you lovely folks recommend, I've always sworn by Corsair, so would it be sensible to just go with them again?

Your PSU is not a very good one, to be honest, and if it is just shutting off, without any blue screen error, then I would say it is the culprit. I would not use Corsair. They are overpriced, and many are not very good quality. Tier 1 or tier 2 units are what you want to be looking at. Yours is a tier 4. http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/id-2547993/psu-tier-list.html Personally, the Tier 2 Evga B2 series 850w would be my choice, in that wattage range.

Ah, if I had seen that list before I bought my parts then I would've spent more on it easily. Once I'm under less of a budget I'll get your recommendation then, 800W and above is way more than what I'll be needing right now but it's better to prepare early on. Plus I don't want to go cheap on the PSU, I've had worse than what I've got now and I paid for it :c

But thanks, I was pretty certain it was an issue with the PSU.
