Max Budget: $700.00
Primary Games: Most blizz games (WoW, HotS, D3, etc.), CoH2
Future Games: The Division
Resolution: 2560x1600

I have been considering the gtx 980ti however I know I do not absolutely need it. The reviews I have read on the gtx 970 have not been great primarily due to feedback concerning a severe and sudden drop in fps within weeks of owning the card. I do not really see the point of the gtx 980 when I have the budget for the 980ti for a few extra bones.

What are your experiences with these cards? Should I try my luck with the cheaper 970 or go all out for the 980ti... or another card entirely?

Looking forward to your feedback.

Yes, sorry, at that resolution the 970 might struggle a little. Still, most Blizzard games aren't very demanding, so it might still do it. But the 980 and variants might do better. And actually, if you're at that high res, a Fury might be a better option.

what resultion? the 980TI is made for 1440p and 4k. The 970 can max out 1080p and almost max out 1440p. The whole 970 not proforming well after a couple weeks is because there is only 3.5GB of GDDR5 Memory and the .5GB is slower and when people report slowdowns its because there using more then 3.5GB of memory. Its very hard to use over 3.5GB of memory most of the time but if you are planning on somehow using 3.5gb+ then don't get it.

No worries. That was my mistake forgetting the resolution.

The GTX 980 is a solid choice for 1440p gaming. It has the full 4 GB VRAM and justifies the $500 price tag for that reason. But the GTX 970 is still a great bang for the buck and can max most games at 1440p. Even two GTX 970s in SLI will usually outperform a single GTX 980 Ti in 1080p and cost approximately the same, providing that you have an SLI-compatible motherboard and at least a 750w PSU.

GTX 980 Ti, is definitely the way to go for 16:10 2560 x 1600.

If you want to try to save a few dollars, then consider purchasing an EVGA refurbished b-stock 980 Ti. It's currently out of stock, but if you set an "auto-notify" on the site and are prepared to buy at a moments notice, I bet you can pick one up within the next 7-10 days. They tend to sell out in a matter of hours, which is why you need to be ready to buy. Otherwise, simply purchase a new 980 Ti at stock speeds and overclock it yourself.
