Not sure if this is the right forum section but I think this has something to do with the motherboard drivers so I put it here.

Just built a new system with the M5a99x EVO R2 and I am trying to install Windows on a Samsung Evo 840 500GB SSD but keep getting errors about formatting.

I have tried the following:

> Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 disc
> Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 USB boot
> Windows 7 Professional 64 bit USB and USB Stick
> A cracked copy of Windows as a final desperate attempt

I have had no luck with this at all. My previous board was an ASRock from 2008 and I installed Windows on the SSD perfectly but I can't on this board.

Here are the issues:

> Sometimes I get a format error
> Sometimes I cannot see the disks in the installation and I have to browse for driver. I then load the motherboard disc and try various drivers (RAID, SATA, chipset) but I either get a message saying they aren't compatible or I get a message saying the aren't there.
> I used diskpart and cleaned and converted to MBR and GPT but still no luck
> In the Windows installation I can delete/format and create new partitions but when I click next it proceeds to the Windows installation and hangs on 0% for a few seconds before giving me the error 'Windows cannot format partition, the error occurred while preparing the partition for installation. Error 0x80070057'

I have run out of ideas. What the hell is going on? PLEASE SOMEONE help me before I throw my new and expensive build out of the window!!!!

Solution
disks?

Disconnect all other hard drives from the mb . Connect the ssd to the lowest numbered SATA port . Usually 0 but possibly 1 on an ASUS board .
The driver disk is useless at this point . The driver installs in windows so without windows ...
Head to BIOS . Find the SSD . Chance the first boot device to be the DVD drive . Save changes . Put the windows install disk in the dvd drive .
Restart the computer using the power button.

When it restarts the install will run .

As soon as you have windows installed then run the driver disk .
Then find a graphics driver and install that

Do it in this order
I have run into this on a similar build for my wife. Have you tried a different SATA cable and port for the SSD?

Also make sure the BIOS is up to date to make sure that there are no compatibility issues.

Right now, I might have it solved but am not sure, my wifes system that has a M5A97 R2 LE will randomly give a "A Disk Read Error Occurred" on the new Samsung 850 Evo I bought he but not on the older WD 500GB Blue I had her on. I haven;t seen it since the last change I did (changed SATA cables) but before this I also tried a clean install on the SSD which would be at "Getting Files Ready" for over an hour then fail with a similar code. That SSD turned out to be bad but your might just need a diferent SATA cable.

I just installed this same drive in my system as a second sdd I got an error saying it has to be connected to a sata 6 port as I had connected it to a sata 3 and it would not let me do anything. version 4.5 of magician still will not work with 10 but your using 7.
I got the error on a gigabyte x79 system.

Most likely this is because the SATA ports on your specific board share bandwidth with SATA express or M.2 slots . This is not going to be the case for the OP

This worked thank you! All I did was change the SATA port. I had it in # 5 and I put it into # 1

What does this mean though? I thought all the 6 x SATA ports were the same on this board, are they different or something?
