Supposing you are to upgrade your system and you already have a ddr3 memory stick, would you buy the asus z97 pro gamer or the asus z170 pro gamer mobo (my cpu will be either 4690k or skylake 6600k depending on the mobo)? The price premium will be $150 if you choose skylake, including new 8gb dd4 memory. Is it worth it? The build will be used mostly for gaming like CoD, Crysis, BF4.

Solution
If you only have 8gb of DDR3 ram I say it is worth it to go to a Skylake platform. The difference i performance would be 8-20% (some application would not benefit at all). Also, The Z170 is more advanced than Z97 chipset (PCI-E 3.0 instead of 2.0, better support for PCI-E ssd, M2 etc. ) P.S. I am building a Skylake pc right now and went with I7 6700k, 2x8gb DDR4 3000mhz CL15 (I say get 16gb of ram if you can because more than likely some future games would require more than 8gb), and an R9 390. I found a combo on newegg for the mobo and ram but that is no longer available. DDR4 is the future so if you wish an upgrade later you could use the ram.

Thank you. I'd certainly put that into consideration.

i wouldn't let already having the DDR3 stop me from upgrading if you have the money available. Z170 & DDR4 with the new system will be noticeably faster in a lot of scenarios. you should be able to sell the DDR3 sticks and any other Z97 components for a decent return or just keep the old setup around for basic hardware troubleshooting, backup system, or gift to someone else.

A good point. I'll take your advice.
