Multiple hard drives drop to zero space, then come back

I've been having an issue lately where my main hard drive seems to be losing free space where it will gradually drop over time, going from some 50 gigs to 1 gig. My second installed drive also seems affected, saying this morning it had 545 gigs free and then dropped to zero in the course of two hours and the computer froze. Restart fixed this and it jumped back to 545. I attached an external drive with 200 gigs free and it also dropped to zero at one point but again came back randomly. I'm not saving files or running any big programs. I'm baffled. Any help would be very appreciated!

I tried using windirstat and checking the system restore point just to be careful but the issue isn't that I have low space but that it disappears over time and then reappears. 545 gigs in two hours. It appears that closing either chrome or firefox will restore the drive to normal. I'm guessing that playing youtube videos is causing it since it usually happens around when I play them. I tried reinstalling the browsers and shockwave, adobe flash but it seems to make no difference. Some sort of memory leak maybe?

Update: it happened again without me opening any browsers, this time I opened the task manager and closed windows defender and it immediately returned to normal. Not sure if that program is causing the issue or just a victim of a larger problem.

Update: Ok I think I have narrowed the problem down. It was still occurring after I had closed windows defender. I tried pausing my online backup software "crashplan" and it then stopped happening. Since then the problem has not resurfaced. So perhaps this program is somehow causing it, it does use a lot of memory to run though why it would cause the drives to misread as zero is beyond me.
