I'd like to run 4-6 SATA HHDs independently. This is not mission critical so not looking to run RAID arrays. If one drive dies, I want to be able to simply replace it. I would like great performance reading/writing to them. Are there any controller cards that would work this way?
PCIe 8 or 16 would be great.

thanks

there are motherboards that do 8 sata ports natively (amd a88x chipset) to which you can add a few 4-port cards. there's some larger cards but they tend to be PCIeX which is extended length which isn't something you find on a regular desktop mobo. i have vantec PCI and PCIe cards, which are not too expensive. i think the models are 310 and 644

What do you mean by independently?
My main PC has 6 drives, each a different drive letter, each a different purpose.
All directly off the motherboard SATA ports.

I have an HP Proliant ML310e, Gen8 v2 server. The motherboard doesn't have separate SATA ports. Instead it has one breakout port where the cable separates into 4 SATA connectors. It came with the Smart Array B120i with 4 ports. But it only supports RAID 0, 1, or 10. I can't get it to run all 4 drives independently, meaning 4 separate drives with their own drive letters in Windows.

This is why relevant info upfront is important.

I have same model and it has two blue separate SATA ports, take a look: http://www.itwriting.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/image5.png
One of them is occupied by DVD recorder.
