I put it in and it says "its not a hardware issue"
but the phone needs to be unlocked.

I know a little bit about the networks being different, but I was hoping there was a workaround by now.

Looks like the Verizon S5 has a SIM card. I had a Verizon iPhone and there was definitely no SIM card.

Still, CDMA and GSM are not compatible so it still will not work.
ATT is on GSM and Verizon is CDMA. The two are completely different standards, and not interchangeable at all. Also, while the ATT SIM cards are removable, Verizon's are built into the device, and cannot be swapped.

Given all of the above, there is no workaround.

I pulled the verizon sim card from my Galaxy s5 and it fit perfectly. Thanks for the response though :) I read about the gsm and cdma thing as well. I just don't understand why it says that it isnt a hardware issue and that att can unlock the phone for me.

Is it in the os or something ?
Im not saying your wrong because the info you provided seems accurate. Im just trying to understand why the phone wont work when it has the exact same hardware as the phone on different carriers.
