I recently built a new computer. All parts are new, with a i5 - 6700k sky lake intel processor with 8 gigs ddr4 ram. I'm needing to re-use my current hard drive for the new build. I've read up on the forums that simply putting the hard drive in the new system will be problematic. I am required to do a "Fresh Install". I still have my windows 7 bootable USB from my old computer (i bought windows 7 online, I didn't have a dvd drive). I also bought a new cd copy of windows 7 from newegg (i have a dvd/blue ray drive in my current computer).

Question(s): For the new system, what is the correct way to wipe the hard drive, and install it?

Do I plug my hard drive into the new computer, pop in the windows disc, install/wipe from disc?

Do I put my USB windows into my current system, and erase my hard drive? Is that even possible?

Or do I just need to buy a completely new hard drive? As stated earlier I have a new copy of windows. I found a 1TB for $50 on newegg.

All you need to do is boot from the CD you have or the USB, when you begin the windows install that way it will give you options to format/partition the hard drive. Just do that right in there and you'll be set.

Assuming the hard drive is installed in the computer case you just built:

Install Windows from USB as it is faster than DVD. From the Windows installation, you have the option to format the hard drive you wish to install Windows. Once formatted, the Windows installation is the next step.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think you can use the same windows license across two different motherboards.

You can, but theres limitations. The general rule is the OEM version is tied. But if you buy a retail or direct from microsoft version you can re-use it.

Try to load it from the USB, I am pretty sure it does not actually ask you for the product key.

If it does then you would need to use the one from the CD, but I seriously doubt it.
