Is my "Noctua NH-U12P" worth keeping?

I'm upgrading my PC from 2008 this weekend from "Asus P5Q and Intel C2Q Q9550" to "Asus Z97-AR and i5 4690K" and wonder if it's worth keeping my trusty CPU cooler: Noctua NH-U12P (see link below)? Is it still considered an ok cooler or should i pick the stockcooler that came with my new 4690K instead. I got the mounting bracket for "socket 1150" for free from Noctua so i can install the now 8 year old cooler on the new motherboard without a problem.

Keep the cooler for now, if you are getting good reasonable temps then there is no need to change it. Noctua also sell CPU cooler fans individually so you could even just grab one of those to upgrade to improve the airflow a bit.

But from what i understand a 4690K runs alot cooler then a Intel Core 2 Quad Q9550?.

Yes most likely in cases, better efficiencies with newer processors. But depends on what you have it clocked to though I guess :D

Not necessarily. It draws less power, but it's also smaller. So the heat is concentrated in a smaller area, which makes it harder to cool. Plus the 4690K uses thermal paste under the heatspreader, where the Q9550 should be solder; solder has better thermal conductivity.

But isn't it bette then that i use the stockkoler that came along with the 4690K instead of an old Noctua from 2008 that were built for a different socket?

No. The Noctua NH-U12P is still better than the stock cooler. It's not as good as newer coolers like the NH-U12S, but it'll do alright.

Will it allow me to do some overclocking aswell?

What would be considered decent temps?

It should. You might not get quite as high an overclock as a newer/better cooler would allow, and it might be a little more noisy, but it should do alright.
