I would think you would want the latest version to have the most updated drivers. You can install it, there may be things that don't work. Wireless is always a questionable area with Linux. For Linux drivers, you may have to go to the hardware manufacturer's website to try to find support. If you have an Intel wireless device you may be able to find something on Intel's website.
Yes n Live CD is better than Vware player 12 uses my sound card and my built in Ethernet and my USB it detects my CPU and memory. it just can not access the hard drive. windows 10 seemed to have issues Ethernet cards like mine so I used vware 12 and it found the drivers for it and installed them. still not in a rush to install it right now. auto updates concern me. Some have had issues with that I do not need that right now.
