Mini-ITX for editing of large video files. Spending some 1000€ (750£/1150$), purchase ASAP.

Dead set on having a setup based on the Corsair 250D case, due to its design and form factor. Bad choice? Can you help me out selecting components?

Preferred specs:
- case: Corsair Obsidian 250D
- MB with socket LGA1151 (for the sake of later upgradability - and DDR4, and Skylake, and all)
- 0,5TB SSD for system/cache, larger HD for storage
- wireless, SD slot (and no optical drive)
- ideally very silent
- not planning on OC, no gaming: it will be used mostly for video editing
- not included in 1000€ budget: screen, mouse, keyboard and OS

I have never built a mini-ITX system, and fear overheating issues. Is this worry justified? Thank you!

For example, would this make sense? Where could/should I save some money? I'm over budget.

Thank you.

These are German prices and even more over budget than your original build, but has all the good parts you need. Many of your selections will not fit in that case.

So we need to cut back a bit (actually a lot!)

Dropping back to Haswell helps, but not much.

Losing the overclocking and going with a Xeon CPU helps a lot.

An overclocked i5 would be more expensive.

BTW. For cooling, we are replacing the 140mm front fan with a 200mm Thermaltake and adding as second 120mm to the side. That will be plenty.

Any cheaper will mean gutting something. (CPU, GPU, or memory)

This is based on your original system and requirements, which I mostly ignored above.

If you want what you say you want, we cannot get close to 1000 euros.

Where can you compromise?

Thank you very much for the answer and for the help, DonkeyOatie. I will not be needing to buy a OS (Debian) or OD, and will be doing no overclocking.

I got to this setup, but still checking on a few things:

78,9 € /// case /// Mini-ITX Corsair Obsidian 250D
249,9 € /// CPU /// Intel Core i5 6600
130,9 € /// MB /// Asus H170I-PLUS D3 Intel H170 SK1151
112,8 € /// RAM /// Kingston Kit 16GB DDR4 2666MHz HyperX Fury Black
199 € /// GPU /// MSI GTX960 Armor OC 2GB GD5
183 € /// SSD /// Crucial BX100 500GB SATA III
61,9 € /// PSU /// Seasonic S12II 520W 80+ Bronze
17,6 € /// fan CPU /// Arctic Freezer 11 LP
113,8 € /// HDD /// Western Digital 3TB SATA III 64MB Green
21,9 € /// front fan /// Noctua NF-A14 (replace original front, move to lateral)
7,5 € /// card reader /// Coolbox CR400 Interno 3.5'
6,9 € /// /// Arctic Silver 5 (3.5g)

1185 € total

The motherboard you have selected is a DDR3 board, but you have selected DDR4 memory. That's what the D3 in the name means. It also needs memory of 1.5V or less, preferably DDR3L at 1.35V.

I would still look at the 200mm fan in the front.

The side fans are 120mm, I'm not sure that the 140mm in the front can be moved to the side.

And we are still miles (km :) ) from 1000 euros.

Thank you for the comments, DonkeyOatie, very useful for me.

Can you recommend a mini-ITX MB with socket 1151 that supports DDR4, preferably with wireless and without the OC specs that carry a premium? Thank you again.
