Hi, I'm upgrading from a laptop to a custom pc, and I have wanted to since a half year but I was waiting for skylake to come out, and I wanted to be future proof. The current rig I am considering is:
CPU : Intel Core i7-6700K 4.0GHz Quad-Core Processor
Motherboard : Asus MAXIMUS VIII HERO ATX LGA1151 Motherboard
Memory : G.Skill Ripjaws 4 series 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4-2400 Memory
Power Supply : Corsair RM 850W 80+ Gold Certified Fully-Modular ATX Power Supply
GPU : ?
So with the GPU I'm really stuck. I have the budget to go for a GTX 980 ti right now. But I am currently using a 1080p monitor and will take atleast an year to bump it up to 4K. Until then, I feel the extra power will all be wasted(right?). Or, I could go for a card like the GTX 980, which can safely max out all games at 1080p, then sell it for a Pascal card next year when I upgrade my monitor. So, which is better? Is buying a 980 ti worth it now? Or is waiting for Pascal worth it? If so, I would love to also get advice on what other cards I can consider for maxing out games at 1080p, I am also open to AMD cards. I also plan to go VR, when i up my monitor.
Sorry for the long post, and thanks in advance.

I always say buy the best you can afford now. There really is no such thing as future proof when it comes to PC gaming and the "next big thing" is always around the corner. The thing that stinks about playing the waiting game is that there will always be something better coming out the next year.

Thats a great idea, and i will definitley consider. Only, I live in India, and with the temperatures here, im really worried about heat issues. Is the money I will have to use to get extra coolers for the gpu set up be better off spent on the single 980ti? Thanks btw, quick response :D

If it was last November-May, I would have easily suggested going for a 970 GTX, however with Pascal coming up around the bend in the next half year, I feel you're in a sticky situation.

Personally I picked up my 970 for $280 around launch (thanks everyone crying about ram, it certainly has paid for itself IMO, AND I can re-sell the thing.) However at this point I'm consistently spamming Google for info on the Pascal line, since I'm interested in upgrading to something in the "80" line.

At this point if you are really interested in updating to Pascal on release, I'd like to recommend a 960. However. I can't honestly considering it posts pretty meh value for the cost. On the other hand I feel the 970 is a bit expensive just to use it for a handful of months and need to find a way to resale it.

I would say that there really is no right answer, since we're sitting on the tail end of the market cycle of the 900 series. 970 is a great card however, if you plan to be bumping up the display next year, hopefully you will be comfortable enough to remarket it. I suppose with a 980ti, the need to upgrade will be much less, however waiting only 4-5 months might get you lots more bang for your buck on the next Pascal line.
