Upgrading of old computer. Help appreciated!

Hello guys! I am having thoughts of upgrading my current computer as it's getting really old, the cpu temps are seriously getting out of hand, and the computer just doesn't run stable enough to my liking for the use (CS:GO)

Now, I know that CS:GO is mostly CPU based, so what I was thinking of upgrading was my MB, ram and CPU. (But please do tell me if I need to upgrade the GPU as well.)

Now, I am a bit split, because its either this upgrade, or a 144 hz monitor, I can't afford both.

Heres my current specs:

CPU: Intel Core 2 Quad Q9550
GPU: Asus P5Q3
RAM: 2x OCZ3P 1600LV2G and 1 Kingston 2 gb, DDR 3, total of 6GB
GPU Nvidia Geforce GTX 570

The help I would then need is to choose the right mb, ram and cpu (I have no problem assembling these things), at the cheapest price possible. My main use is CS:GO.

The second question would be if this is needed, should I just buy a monitor for now? I have locked my fps to 120 and it seems to be stable at that, I do however know it needs to run at 144 at least to be able to benefit from a 144hz monitor. I am so conflicted. Any help would be appreciated, guys! (and the occasional girl)

#Edit: forgot to add my budget. 300$

I am also contemplating buying a cheap but powerful cooler for my cpu and try to overclock it (I would need help with this aswell, been a long time since I've done anything of the likes of OC) and then just buy a monitor instead. What are your thoughts on this? :)

Seems to be a slow day on TH today. :p

If you're mainly or exclusively playing cs:go I don't think you really need to upgrade, you say in your first post the system is capable of running the game in excess of 120FPS.
If the temperatures are getting too high it could be why the system is unstable so it's probably time to clean out the CPU and graphics card coolers and replace the thermal paste on both.
Try running with just the two sticks of OCZ RAM installed, in dual channel mode, some 'boards can be fussy about mixing RAM, especialy if the modules have different timings which could be another source of the instability.

Thanks for the reply, mate!

I just had a decent clean of the computer (bear in mind, my definition of decent clean) . Reapplied thermal paste to cpu and general de-dusting. I didn't catch your reply before I did it though, so I didnt remove the kingston ram.

What do you mean by "dual channel mode"?

Is it like putting them in the two black ram-spots or the two orange ones?

How it is set up right now is like this

Kingston - OCZ - nothing - OCZ
Black - orange - black -orange

Thanks again

Thanks again, Coozie7, I will do it when I get the chance after this. (Clan practise atm)

Theres another problem I'm having. When I boot and I hit the asus p5q3 screen it just sits there for a good 3-5 minutes then my keyboard and mouse starts lighting up and thats the sign im waiting for, because then within 10 seconds it hits the windows loading screen. Any suggestions as to what might be the problem? I cant get to update my bios for some reason. do you think that could be the issue?

I already took out the battery and let it out for 15 seconds while pressing the power button 10 times, and resat bios to default, no difference. I will have a look in a bit to check what you said about the sata leads though! Never even thought that could be an issue!
