Hi
I have a 1.5 TB WD Green HDD.
Recently some files (compressed, zips rars) had become corrupted. so i checked the SMART data and saw 200+ pending sector count.
I did a full format to relocate the bad sectors. the pending count went down to 0 but neither the relocated count increased nor the uncorrectable count.

I read other threads that say the OS deems the sectors to be fine now but they might fail again.

My question is what could cause these disappearing pending sectors and should i continue using this drive.

Thank you

Hi there Aseem September,

Sorry that you are facing some issues with your WD drive. :(
Sometimes reformatting the drive could sort this pending sectors issue out.

As you have already backed up the data stored on the drive, I would advise you to write zeros(full erase) on the drive with WD's Data Lifeguard Diagnostic tool. After that, you can run both short and extended tests. It will not hurt to test the drive with some third party tools as well: http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/282651-32-best-diagnostic-testing-utility

In case any of the tests fails(or show some reallocated sectors), then it may be a good idea to RMA the drive.

"Later, when some of these sectors are read successfully, the value is decreased. If errors still occur when reading some sector, the hard drive will try to restore the data, transfer it to the reserved disk area (spare area) and mark this sector as remapped."

this is from the link you posted. when sectors are read successfully and errors dont reoccur, then is it fine to keep using the HD.

all the data is backed up so no issues there.

EDIT- Also did a minitool partition wizard Surface Test, it also shows no errors.
