Specs:
CPU: AMD Athlon X4 860K Quad Core Processor
GPU: XFX Radeon R7 265
PSU: XFX PRO 650W
Motherboard: ASRock FM2A88M-HD+
RAM: Zeus 4gb DDR3 1600

Background:

I inherited this custom- built PC from a friend after he had a few overheating problems with it. He played a lot of DOTA, and occasionally the PC would overheat and freeze/ he would have to restart the computer. He didn't want to mess with it, bought a new one and gave this one to me. I was looking for a new computer, and thought this would be an interesting project to work on.

I thought it might be a PSU / cooling issue, so I changed the case, installed better fans, and upgraded the PSU. After upgrading the PSU, there was about a 2 week period of no freezing.

(Side note: The old PSU was a corsair 430W)

When running games (Dota 2, Shadow of Mordor, Company of Heroes) none of the components get above 65 C. However, now the computer will randomly lock up and requires a hard reset. Each freeze is different. Sometimes, the screen will just freeze wherever it is. Sometimes, random colors will pop up, accompanied with a loud buzzing noise coming from the speakers. Sometimes the screen will shake, or go black. All of the fans, keyboard lights, mouse lights, etc. will stay on when this happens.

So far, I've run Prime95 (~2hrs) and FurMark (~30min) tests successfully with no overheating or freezing issues. As of now, this only happens when I play videogames.

I'm thinking it might be a problem with the motherboard, but I'm really looking for anything else it could be. Does anyone have any thoughts / suggestions? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Also, I'm a bit new to the custom built PC community, and although I've been doing some research there might be some info I have forgotten to include. Let me know, and I'll try to find it out!

I thought this could be it as well, because the previous power supply had a broken 24 pin cable. But this new one I have is very sturdy, and I wouldn't think that to be the issue, right?

Did yours randomly shut down when under stress, or if the computer was jostled?

There is one review on the modules that is similar.

Pros: Well in the end managed to get it to work but not without some time and headaches.

Cons: Well, when installing on a new build the system would lock up on occasion (between 10 to 40 minutes), I thought it might just be a quirk of a new system until it get configured but this was in the BOIS setup and when installing Windows 7 from the disk so really this should never happen. When having finally being able install windows, it took days to get the updates installed because of the lock ups with no error messages. Finally I went into the BIOS MEM config and changed the timings from the indicated auto config specs of 9-9-9-24 up to 11-11-11-28, with these settings the memory stopped crashing the system. So the specs that they advertise these memory sticks to run at, that is automatically picked up by the system is false.

Just went into BIOS to take a look. I was on DDR3 1333 instead of 1600, so I changed it to the XMP profile. When attempting to adjust to 11-11-11-28, the PC wouldn't turn on... I had to readjust to 9-9-9-24. Now, however, it's reading DDR3 1600. Hopefully this fixes the problem!

Unfortunately, it seems like the computer will still randomly restart under stress.... It seems to happen less frequently, but is still happening. Do you have any other thoughts / ideas?
