I'll preface this by saying that I've never, ever assembled a computer by myself and I'm admittedly fairly nervous about the process.

I've had a computer for the last 7-8 years that I've upgraded and kept together through a precarious combination of duct tape and my hopes and dreams. See this thread. Now my processor is acting up and there appear to be some stability problems. In order to get a new processor, I need a new motherboard... and if I'm going to get a new motherboard, I'd like to get a new case because the one that I'm using is a monstrously heavy mid-tower... and if I'm going to swap the case, I probably need new cooling because the fan I have wails like a banshee.

Money isn't an especially large issue, but I'd like to keep things affordable by not rebuying what I already possess and trying not to splurge unnecessary items that wouldn't give me better usability.

Here are the things that I currently have that I can keep:
GeForce GTX 970
Intel i5 4460
2x 8GB RAM

I'm also using Corsair TX 750w. I assume I can just use this, my old hard drive, and the Windows 7 installed on it?

I need to find replacements for everything else. I'm struggling with choosing the right case and figuring out what to use for cooling, but I assume picking a motherboard would be as easy as plucking something off the 'best of' list that's within my price range.

Help? Can anyone also give any glaring warning tips for assembling my first system from scratch?

Let me know if I need to clarify anything. Thanks.

yeah your CPU isn't bad and it is up to you whether you want to get an overclocking motherboard to allow for getting an overclockable and more powerful motherboard in the future or whether to just get a standard motherboard, also case is often for me personal preference, I never like to go and pick a case for someone go onto pc partpicker and look at the different cases on there, also I recommend getting a fan controller, I love them so easy to use and so nice to use, also I am no expert in fans so I am sure someone else will help with that! get an ocz SSD with a 1tb hard drive and load your OS onto the SSD and windows is also a personal preference, I use windows 10 as I quite like the feel of it and also as far as I know it offers performance improvements however is too user friendly with all this signing in crap, maybe if you have the money go for a water cooler, they are lovely and do keep the temps down and look so much smarter!

Hey, I am also fairly new to this custom computer business (built my first computer last year) and would like to say that is is a truly rewarding and wonderful experience, provided you have the proper guidance and information to help you! It isn't as difficult as it sounds, I can assure you of that. To start, I would like to start with your processor. You say it is acting up? If there is any doubt about the durability of such a component as the CPU, it is best to leave it out of the equation (my opinion though). Now, you say you don't have a budget, but money isn't a huge concern. It would be better for anyone reading your thread to have sort of a set budget for you in order to make meaningful suggestions toward your question(s).

At this point, I would ask that you outline some of the games you intend on playing for a more accurate build suggestion!

Also, in regard to your concern about the case and cooling, I would agree with what Oli said; the case is something you should choose yourself. After all, that is the thing that will be sitting on your floor or desk and will constantly catch looks from all that pass by! Water cooling is a popular solution for playing games and is very effective. If you were on a tight budget you could look at good air coolers that perform around the same as low end water coolers like the CM Hyper 212 Evo, but I think you might be happier with the performance of an H100i or a dual fan Deep Cool solution.
