DVI is old news.
DisplayPort (DP) is what's newest.
DVI is still better than VGA for more refresh rates

Most new GPUs have a Displayport output, if not multiple ones.
Like the GTX 960, has 3 display connectors, and only 1 dvi and hdmi ports: http://www.geforce.com/hardware/desktop-gpus/geforce-gtx-960/specifications
AMD's R9 300 series will have a lot of variation on what ports they have because the OEMs (EVGA/MSI/ect) customize the ports quite a bit
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814127878 (1DP,1HDMi,2DVI,no vga)

Basically, DVI and HDMI are already old news, for better going forward compatibility, get a DisplayPort capable monitor.

If you currently have one or the other, and switching would require buying a converter or cable, the difference isn't worth it, most likely not even noticeable. DVI is digital while VGA is analog which could possibly impact quality at high resolutions (basically 1080p will be fine). If you have all the accessories on hand, then just use DVI.
