Well my desktop is connected directly to cable internet. Note my desktop does have any WiFi hardware. What I looking to do is have have my desktop connected directly to the internet. However I want to be able setup temp WiFi that I use occasionally use my cell phone and any other future WiFi devices. I seen software like connectify , maryfi which may work for me. However I not sure what is best software / hardware . The distance from the phone or any other device would be around 10 feet from my desktop, at the most it would be 20 feet. I would prefer USB hardware..

Honestly, it'd be far more reliable and easier to just pick up a cheap router.
Those hotspot tools are crap in terms of speed, require your computer to be on, and generally aren't worth using.

My daughter in Uni halls was not allowed to add a router/access point
so we used
http://www.mypublicwifi.com/publicwifi/en/index.html
Which was probably against the rules as well but she got away with it.
It did the trick and meant she could use her phone without using all her data plan.
