It's trying to authenticate that you are who you say you are. That meaning the network you're trying to connect to is trying to verify that you have proper authorization to be on that network. If you're hung up and it won't let you connect, ensure that the network is the correct one you're trying to reach and the password is correct as well. In some cases, you may have/need a login name as well (and a particular password to go with it) to have access to the network. Either way, authentication issues usually mean there is a problem with the information trying to be used to access a network.
