Hi everyone,

I am really struggling to get my WD Elements and/or Seagate GoFlexDesk running. The situation is the following:
I plug one of them (both are 2TB) in on my win7 hp laptop. They don't show up in my computer, they show up under my device management but just as "disk station". They don't show up in disk management. I can't find them with data diagnostics tools, WD smartware or Seagate Dashboard.

I tried uninstalling them and reinstalling, deleting and manually updating drivers of win7, ... nothing works.

I really have to do a back-up since it's already a week too late.

If anyone needs more information, just ask.

I appreciate any help!
Greetings

HI again, Integrate!

Have you checked if and how the externals are detected in Disk Management?
I'd also try uninstalling them from Device Manager and re-installing them afterwards. ( http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc725782.aspx )
When I suggested you to check out your motherboard manufacturer's website, I meant to look for the USB hub controller drivers for the motherboard itself and not the external drives' utilities specifically.
Another way to check if the HDDs are detected by any system is to go to Command Prompt line (Run as Administrator) and use the diskpart > then type the "list disk" command. It should display a list of all the disks attached to your system.

Keep me posted!

Hey there, Integrate!

I'd recommend you to go to your motherboard manufacturer's website and find your model, there should be a tab (usually called "Support & Downloads"). Under that, you should be able to find all the available drivers and utilities for your system. Repeat the uninstalling and re-installing procedure with your USB drivers, just make sure you update them from there and not Windows Updates.
If you still suspect the external drives as the source of the issue, I'd recommend you to try using different USB cables and even try plugging them to a different computer.

Give it a try and let me know it goes! Good luck! :)

Hi there, thanks for the suggestion. But both for the Seagate and wd there is no software/driver available on the site. They use the drivers from windows itself.

I already tried 3 different cables and a lot of USB ports and 2 different computers :(

I updated the driver of the hub controller. Then it suddenly showed my disk in disk management, just not allocated. When I try to do that, it says fault in i/o device.

(already thanks for the help, making progress :) )

Hey there again, Integrate!

This seems rather unfortunate, I'd recommend you to try using different USB cables with the external HDDs or even try plugging them to a different USB port. Once you do that, check their status in Disk Management again. Re-initializing the drives will format them and erase everything, so make sure you have a backup of the data before attempting to allocate the external volumes.
Another thing you should do is test the external drives using their brand-specific diagnostic tool from the manufacturers. Here's a link to the WD's Data LifeGuard Diagnostics: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=jXfRwR
Make sure you run both the QUICK and the EXTENDED test, so that can determine the health and S.M.A.R.T. status of the drive.

Keep me posted with the results!

Thanks a lot SuperSoph for the help. The information on the drives is back upped, so I can reformat them. Suddenly I was able to allocate them so the problem is solved.

Again thanks for the help, the main solution was updating the driver of my motherboard.
