I have a 1.5TB WD hard drive I got probably about 5 years ago I think. It has the usb, firewire, and esata hookups along with a power cord. I typically have this hooked up all the time and think it's probably not a good thing to do since it's suppose to be a backup and not a regular used drive. This weekend I was trying to see what was on some older drives to clean them up. So I was doing a lot of restarting, moving cables and in the bios.
Later the external drive was inaccessible. It started by showing a drive but won't allow me to access it and would prompt me to format first, which I didn't do. Then I couldn't see it and the light wouldn't go on like normal. I decided to pop the cover off. After doing so I was able to see the drive again, but still couldn't access it with any of the ports. I thought maybe the board between the attachments to the drive might of went bad so I pulled it apart just to have the drive all by itself. I hooked it up to one of the sata cables and power and got the same thing. I could see the drive, can't access it, and it wants me to format before using. It doesn't appear to be recognizing drive size either.
Is it dead? Is there any way to pull data off it? First time ever I've had a drive die on me or have complications like this. I do have a backup of this drive which is about 2/mo old so I'll get most of my data, but I have some other data that I'd really like to get. Suggestions?
Thanks!
